Spectral Types

The spectral type of a star is a measure of its temperature. In order of decreasing temperature, the types are labeled
O B A F G K M R N S
Princeton astronomer H. N. Russell's students composed this mnemonic for remembering the order:
Oh Be A Fine Girl Kiss Me Right Now. Smack.
Astronomer Donald Hayes' version was
Oh Be A Fine Gorilla Kill My Roommate Now. Smash.
Another version, referring to a particularly annoying member of an astronomy class about 35 years ago, was
Once Beaten Any Fool Gains Knowledge. Might Ronnie Need Smacking?
