Percolation

Percolation seems first to have been studied by Broadbent and Hammersley in 1957.
The relevance of this model for problems such as oil recovery and radioactive waste disposal is obvious.
Perhaps more surprising is that it can produce fractals, and that it seems to play a role in describing diffusion.
